Taking inspiration from traditional tartan textiles, the Synthesis Hat uses simple finishing work to create a plaid effect. The smooth used for the contrasting rib, horizontal stripes, and embroidered vertical lines accentuates the fuzzy halo of the main color yarn, .

This hat is worked in the round, from the bottom up. The brim is worked in 2x2 rib using only Falkland Wool. The body is then worked in a plaid pattern with reverse stockinette stitch providing the main texture and alternating rounds of MC or CC. After the crown is completed, the hat is fastened off and lines of CC are embroidered on to complete the plaid look. Finally, a pompom is attached.
